Advisory Board Meeting and more

Hi All,

I want to thank all of you for attending the meeting. It is really good for us in the Department to get feedback. We are in the process of planning some individual meetings so we can get more input from many of you. Thank you for taking your time to meet with us.

Response to Da Disi.....YES the content knowledge is central but how can a person getting a credential is k12 special ed...be a content area expert in everything?? Our students are all college graduates and they have all passed the CSET tests that are content area "minimum knowledge" tests. As they learn about behavior management, assessment, and instruction as they are each applied to various grade levels---our candidates will bring knowledge of adaptations and individualization to the table as a partner with general education. Our candidates are NOT content free but they are not the content experts that the general ed. partners are....so they work together....and eventually general ed. partners get better at beh. management and adaptations and special ed. credential holders gets better and better at content...it is a dance...all working together. This is what I think... and...

Best wishes to all...let's continue the conversations!! You advisory board members will be hearing from me in the next month!

Teachers of Content vs Access

The question that I had intended to ask during the meeting dealt with the notion that General Education teachers teach content and SPED teachers are concerned primarily with access. My question is, how does one 'teach' something without facilitating understanding or providing access to the new information, or as I have often heard Dr. Graves say, "new concept, rule or strategy"?

Welcome

Welcome to the Committee Advisory Group Blog.

This blog has been created as a means to continue our ongoing collaborative relationships in efforts to improve the Special Education Credential Programs at San Diego State University. This blog will also be used to share resources and communicate regarding important upcoming events.

We value your input and strive to address the needs of the districts within our service region. As a Community Advisory Group member for SDSU's Department of Special Education, each of you have been sent an email invitation to join this blog. Once you complete the invitation process (if you don't have an Blogger account, you will need to create one), you will be able to post blog entries and have other Advisory Group members provide comments to your discussion thread.

Again, welcome and we look forward to a productive and interesting discussion forum.
